Who I am

drjoeDr. Joe Klassen started his practice at Fish Creek Naturopathic Medicine in 2006.  He is a licensed Naturopathic Doctor in Alberta and belongs to the College of Naturopathic Doctors of Alberta.  He graduated from Bastyr University of Naturopathic Medicine in Seattle, WA in 2004.  The comprehensive ND program includes the dissection anatomy, physiology, pathology that align with similar MD programs, plus the focus on botanical medicine, physical medicine, hydrotherapy, lab testing, nutrition and other natural healing modalities.  In addition, he is a Board Certified Colon Hydrotherapy Instructor and practitioner

Prior to Naturopathic Medicine, Dr. Klassen was a graduate of the University of Saskatchewan with a Bachelor of Commerce degree.  After starting a career in the stressful world of Fortune 500 companies, he decided to make a radical change and enter the field of natural health.  This experience has given him a real –world perspective on health challenges in our community, and a realistic approach to health when relating to patients with challenging work and home demands.

Dr. Klassen has a special interest in the naturopathic principle of “Docere” or “Doctor as Teacher”.  Accordingly, he teaches anatomy & physiology, cellular biology and pathology at the Canadian School of Natural Nutrition in Calgary. In addition, he does wellness consulting and health education for corporations and community organizations of many types.  He sometimes offers educational seminars to the general public at local health food stores, community associations or events on topics such as hormones, stress, allergies, digestive disfunction, children’s health, fertility and many others.  As mentioned, he is able to train new colonhydrotherapists in our clinic with his certification.  He also now educates other Naturopathic Doctor’s on Laboratory Testing as the National Clinical Specialist for Rocky Mountain Analytical.

Dr. Klassen is involved in the community in many ways.  He has been involved with the Friends of Fish Creek Provincial Park Society with many projects.  He is an active Rotarian involved in many charitable projects through their organization.  He is the Treasurer on the CNDA council.  Through the clinic, he has financially helped Greens Eggs and Ham of Leduc Alberta, a small local farmer needing investors.  He enjoys many outdoor activities, such as hiking, biking and skiing and loves to travel to new places.

“Our goal is to address each patient as an individual and use the intelligent healing power of nature to help the patient to achieve more optimal health.” – Dr. Joe Klassen

What I Do

What is Naturopathic Medicine?

Founded upon a holistic philosophy, naturopathic medicine combines safe and effective traditional therapies with the most current advances in modern medicine. Naturopathic medicine is appropriate for the management of a broad range of health conditions affecting all people of all ages. Naturopathic physicians (ND's) are the highest-trained practitioners in the broadest scope of naturopathic medical modalities. In addition to the basic medical sciences and conventional diagnostics, naturopathic education includes therapeutic nutrition, botanical medicine, homeopathy, natural childbirth, classical Chinese medicine, hydrotherapy, naturopathic manipulative therapy, pharmacology and minor surgery.

Principles of Naturopathic Medicine:

The naturopathic doctor will practice the art, science and spirit of the profession to the best of his/her ability and judgment following these principles of naturopathic medicine.

The naturopathic doctor:

  • shall endeavour to first, do no harm; to provide the most effective health care available with the least risk to his/her patients at all times. (Primum Non Nocere)
  • shall recognize, respect and promote the self-healing power of nature inherent in each individual human being. (Vis Medicatrix Naturae)
  • shall strive to identify and remove the causes of illness, rather than to eliminate or suppress symptoms. (Tolle Causum)
  • shall educate his/her patients, inspire rational hope and encourage self-responsibility for health. (Doctor as Teacher)
  • shall treat each person by considering all individual health factors and influences. (Treat the Whole Person)
  • shall emphasize the condition of health to promote well-being and to prevent diseases for the individual, each community and our world. (Health Promotion, the Best Prevention)
